Superboy

Superboy is trying to keep kids off the streets. He makes a swimming pool, but that doesn’t attract enough of them. So when he finds a clarinetist who seems to fascinate the children of the town he builds a recreation center based upon the man. However the clarinetist gets no recognition and he leaves feeling cheated. The next day he is playing his instrument and the children of the town follow him as though in a trance. Superboy has to save their lives multiple times. The man claims that there is no law against playing and that because he carves his reeds out of the original pipe of the pied piper he has this ability. He wants 50k to leave town. Well Clark finds out what is truly going on, that the kids are being paid to follow, and they risk their lives because they know Superboy will save them. He is able to stop the game by proving the man to not be controlling the children, and what is more he wasn’t the man who helped Superboy earlier, having kidnapped the real clarinetist.

Clark Kent is having a rough day. You see his things keep disappearing. His glasses, his homework, and as he is just about to save a life, himself. He finds himself years into the future where a man is trying to make hos fourth dimensional camera work, but so far it keeps bring things from the past. He is a museum curator and unfortunately his business is being beaten down by a nearby rival who holds the world’s largest Superman exhibit. In order to keep from having his things stolen until the camera works Clark puts on a show for the people of the future, and is sent back home in time to save that life.

Superboy has had a long day doing various tasks across the country, so when he comes home he is quite excited for a quiet night with his friends. However Pa asks him to do some work around the farm instead. Angry Clark refuses and is sent to his room. The next day Clark is gone, having left a note. He still appeared in town as Superboy though and the Kents worked very hard to speak with him, to apologize. They even go so far as causing troubles for Superboy to solve. But to no avail… He had known they weren’t his parents from the start, and when he showed up with the real Ma and Pa Kent, they confessed that they had suspected Clark of being Superboy, but with how cold Superboy had acted about Clark running away made them sure they had been wrong.

Superman

Lois is giving our boy some trouble, like usual but now he has decided that he has had enough! So he goes back in time and becomes a disk jockey instead of a reporter. He has to finish his jobs in the time a song ends, but he’s fast enough to make it work. Only problem there is that his secretary is just as bad as Lois for trying to prove he’s Superman. However he is able to prove her wrong, and she quits, going to seek a job where she will really be with Superman. Her replacement? Lois Lane herself. He gives up this timeline as a bad job and goes home.

Superman has a moment of dizziness and knows that only kryptonite could effect him so. He finds the newly arrived meteor and tries to give himself an immunity to the substance by forming a collar and wearing it. Clark I get where you are coming from, but my dear its small bits of exposer over time not, lets drink the whole vial of poison! However he does not die, but after passing out is taken by a race of yeast aliens to be their pet. Weakened by the Kryptonite our hero has to work extra hard to pass the tests of his intelligence. After he catches a crook on their planet they begin to suspect he is a being with intelligence at least as high as their own. So they give him one final test, durning which Clark is able to free himself from his collar. He then is brought back to Earth with apologies for having taken him.

The police chief isn’t pleased that Perry has been printing so many stories about Superman, as it makes it seem as though he is the only law man in town. So Perry sends Clark and Lois to be police officers for a while. Of course they aren’t given dangerous jobs, as they arent trained. But Clark knows that Lios is  a trouble magnet, so he ends up leaving his post at the zoo to help her. Clark gets in trouble after the second time Lois gets promoted with Superman’s help. He is told that he will be fired if such things happen again. So when he is captured by a gang he has to save himself as Clark. He does this by making himself a bullet proof vest and then charging in. Good thing they didn’t shoot his face.

Tomahawk

One thing I wish about these stories is that they went in some semblance of order. But if you’ve been reading this section you know they don’t. But I think my favorite time period is when Tom and Dan are fighting the British, like he is in this first tale. Tom is asked to bring rifles to their allies on the other side of the enemy troops, and are given a few men to help them. They are a mountain climber who helps lead them where the brits date not follow, a strong man who kills a buffalo with his bare hands, and a fencer good enough to fight off an entire party of the enemy.

In this story there is a man who looks just like Tom, but with a beard. He also hates Tom for some reason and thinks him a coward. Well he has a personal mission to make all the world  of his cowardice. So he tries to get himself killed as Tomahawk, begging all the while. The real Tom steps in and saves the man’s life, and then the two have a fight, that should Tom win the other must do as he says for a day. Now of course Tom defeats the other and he uses the others man’s help, and the fact that they look so similar to break into a fort as a prisoner, and have all the troops follow him as he escapes. This makes it easy for the Yankee troops to take the fort. We then find that it was an incomplete report that made it seem as though Tom had abandoned the man’s brother that made him think he a coward, but now they were friends.

Tom and Dan ride into a town to find all its inhabitants held captive by a normally peaceful tribe. Tom questions what is going on and is told that when a party of the chief’s men had gone into town to trade the chief’s son had been killed. He was planning on killing the towns folk two by two until the killed stepped forward. Disguised as one of the townsfolk Tom stepped forward so he could get away and then investigate. He found proof that it was a native that had shot the young man and then tricked the man Cripled Raven into revealing his foul deed.

Wonder Woman

People have been vanishing from various places, instantly. Investigating this Steve and Diana go to each of the places people had disappeared from. At first it seemed hopeless, till the man vanished from before the startled Amazon’s eyes. Though she could not see him she dived into the water, as she thought it the most likely place for him to have gone as every disappearance had been near water. Finally she reached the sea with no sign of her fiance. But she detected an atomic bomb in the water and headed toward it. She found a race of troglodytes who were planning to blow the crust of the earth away, so there was only water remaining. She and the other captured people were placed upon the bomb, while being paralyzed by a weapon. WW called her plane to save the people with her and slowly fought the paralysis until the bomb broke into small pieces. The troglodytes ended up trapped beneath their own explosion and the earth was safe once more.

Diana is called home with the news that something has happened to her mother. The queen had fallen into a deep sleep and could not wake. Wonder Woman sought anything new in the days before the queen’s collapse and found a ring. She put it on, hoping to be lead to the same fate as her mother and there for save her. Then she finds an inscription on the ring telling her it who made it. She had heard tell of the maker and knew where to find him. Swiftly she flew her jet to his location where she discovered someone sleeping just as her mother was. Then she was captured by the maker of the ring, who proceeded to tell her that she could wake the sleepers by touching them with the ring, if she was royal of course. But unless she was able to make him fall the ring would soon put her in a coma. So she slipped his hands and ran along the beach, causing enough friction to melt the sand to glass, on which the maker fell. WW was then able to save those who had been trapped by the ring.

Wonder Woman agreed to do the stunts in a movie( money going to a charity of course) but she recanted when she realises she took the job from someone else. She sticks around set though, and goog thing too as the stunts are very dangerous and she has to save the stunt man a few times without letting anyone know. In the end though she realizes these aren’t just unlucky accidents but sabotage and she captures the older stunt man who feared the younger becoming the best in the field.

Kid Colt Outlaw

Maybe I’m expecting too much. It is the golden age still. But I tire of having the same plot run over and over. It would be different if the characters had any depth, but at this point it all reads the same. A young man has a fight with his father and runs off to become an outlaw. On the way he finds Colt who promises to show him the ropes. Like always he is really planning on showing him being an outlaw sucks.

In contrast I liked this one well enough. A gang of outlaws ambush a party of Natives, and slaughter them all. Colt rides in and sees them looting the bodies and kills them all. Then he finds that the cheif is still alive and think Colt had killed his tribe. They separate as a posse is heading that way, but Colt follows the other man. The chief swears vengeance on all white men, and Colt steps out of the shadows to fight. Here we have a couple pages of their fight, of which Colt wins, but he doesn’t kill the chief. Instead he tells him he is still his friend, and the chief accepts him and calls him brother.

A man who was guilty of a multitude of crimes was hung right at the beginning of this tale. But before his neck snapped he swore he would come back and kill every man at his execution. Of coursr the supernatural isn’t very popular yet in comics, so he didn’t come back as a ghost or ghoul or what have you. It was his son who exacted his revenge, killing six people in one night. If you are wondering how Colt comes into this, simple, he was at the execution. But he didnt just wait around for the killer, he tracked him down and they fought a mighty battle, that ended in the son’s death.
